James L. Black, the son of Nelson Albert and Margaret Ruth Larson Black, was born May 1, 1948, in Kellogg, Idaho. Jim attended Northwest Bible College in Minot, N.D.

On Aug. 21, 1970, Jim was united in marriage with Dottie Cox in Parkersburg, W.V. Jim served in the ministry and as a pastor for 40 years. He has been pastor of the Newton Foursquare Church for 18 years.

Jim enjoyed horses and horseback riding, reading and collecting old books, old cars, loving on the grandkids, coffee time and keeping up on the Denver Broncos and North Carolina Tar Heels. He attended the Pastors Prayer Group.

Jim had a strong desire to minister and encourage people. His legacy lives on through his children as they carry out a life of ministry.

Jim was called home to glory on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 59 years old.

Jim was preceded in death by his father.

Those left to honor Jim’s memory include his wife, Dottie Black of Newton; his children, Danika and Scott Smith of New York, Desha and Isaac Davis of New Hampshire, Dustin Black of Newton, David Black of California, Donne Black of Newton and Darci Black of Newton; his grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Coby Smith, Hailey Smith, Ashlyn Smith, Evalyn Davis and Gavin Davis; and his brothers and sisters, Wayne and Judy Black of Oregon, Sharon and Don Gadbury of California, Dan and Edie Black of California, Shirley and Donny Shuttlesworth of Texas and Kathy and Jim Palmer of Idaho.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Foursquare Church in Newton. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Memorials may be designated to Gideon’s International.
