INDIANOLA — Gladys Mae Andrews died Aug. 10, 2007, at The Village peacefully in her sleep in Indianola just 17 days before her 106th birthday.

She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Yeager, 103, of Corydon; two nieces, Elaine (Hull) Smith and Irene (Hull) Swedenburg, both of Indianola; and one nephew, Bill Yeager of Allerton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvah and Callie Andrews; one sister, Fay (Andrews) Hull of Newton; and two brothers, Ernest and Harold Andrews, both of Newton.

Gladys Mae Andrews was born Aug. 27, 1901, in Sewal. Her early years in Sewal included the Andrews sisters: Gladys, Faye and Phyllis, who were legendary in girls basketball. In the late 20s, Gladys got her chauffeurs license so she could drive the county nurse on her calls over the then ice, snow and mud roads of Wayne County.

By the 30s, she was living in Newton and began working at the Vernon Company. There Gladys began a lifelong relationship which culminated with both Gladys and the Vernon Company celebrating their 100th birthdays together.

She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, she met the Marlboro Man at a Colorado Dude ranch, searched for buffalo while off road in the Black Hills and while living in Newton, drove Mrs. Howard Snyder to Texas for many, many years.

Her service to her family, friends and community was a matter of love and concern. She was well respected; much loved and will be long remembered. Gladys was a fine lady and will be missed dearly.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
