Velma M. Adamson, 99, of Newton, formerly of Des Moines, died Tuesday Nov. 6, 2007, at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Bower and Edith (Blackwood) Murphy, she was born Jan. 31, 1908, in Murphy, located in Buena Vista Township. Velma grew up in Newton and moved to Des Moines in the 1950s. She moved back to Newton in 2000.

She was united in marriage to Victor E. Adamson.

After graduating from Newton High School in 1926, Velma worked at the Cross and Hamil Law Firm in Newton. She later was a proofreader for the Wallace Farmer Magazine in Des Moines. She served as the secretary for the Typographical Union until the age of 93. She traveled across the country to attend national meetings for the union. Velma enjoyed doing genealogical research on her family.

She is survived by her sister, Wilma R. Rorabaugh of Newton and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor E. Adamson in 1968; three brothers, Lauren, Wayne and Merril Murphy; and two sisters, Cleora Wood and Ilah Coil.
