Max W. Kreager

Max W. Kreager, 67, of 418 N. 6th Ave. E., a representative from Jasper County in the Iowa Legislature from 1961 until 1964 and manager of American Federal Savings and Loan in Newton from 1974 until retiring in 1981, died Friday noon at a Sandusky, Ohio, hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church.

Dr. Richard Bentziner, pastor of the church, and Bishop Wayne Clymer of the Iowa Area United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home.

Visitation with the family will be held after 6 p.m. today at the family home at 418 N. 6th Ave. E.

Memorial contributions to a fund in Mr. Kreager's name may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Marjorie; two daughters, Mrs. John (Mary) Holwell of Des Moines and Mrs. Scott (Marsha) Schroeder of Davenport; a brother, Merle Kreager of Rt. 1, Newton; and his mother, Mrs. Will (Glen) Kreager of Heritage Manor Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister.

Mr. Kreager, recipient of the Great Newton Area Chamber of Commerce's Community Service Award in 1977, formerly had managed the Poweshiek-Jasper Farm Service Co. in Grinnell and was owner-operator of Central Iowa Insulation Co.

Extremely active in church affairs, Mr. Kreager held most offices in the First United Methodist Church and was a certified United Methodist Church lay speaker.

A past chairman of the Iowa Conference Board of the Laity, he was twice a delegate to the World Methodist Conference and was a member of the Iowa Annual Conference.

Mr. Kreager also was a member of the North Central Jurisdictional Conference, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Bishop's Mission to Ghana in 1982.

He also was active in the church's Heifer Project International.

Mr. Kreager served on the board of trustees of Westmar College in Lemars.

He served for 13 years as s member of the board of the Des Moines Area Community College and served as a board president.

A former chairman of the Jasper County Republican Committee, Mr. Kreager was past president of the Iowa Council of Area School Boards and past president of the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce.

He also served on the Jasper County 4-H Club Committee and was a longtime member and past president of the Newton Noon Kiwanis Club.

The son of William and Glen Gates Kreager, he was born July 1, 1916 in Newton and was graduated from Newton Community High School.

He was married to Marjorie Scheerer Aug. 26, 1946 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1983
