Velma I. Springer

Velma Irene Main Springer, 89, 626 S. 4th Ave. E., died Sunday, Aug. 25, at her home of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Art Anderson, pastor of the Newton First Baptist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Slagel Cemetery near Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons, Floyd and Charles, both of Newton; a daughter, Pauline (Mrs. Andrew) Hackathorn of Newton; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul Main of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Orville Jan. 30, 1987, a son, Darrell in infancy, a son, Donald, in 1982, two brothers, Orin Main and Dale Main, a grandson and a granddaughter, both in infancy.

Mrs. Springer was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church.

The daughter of Charles and Hettie Myrtle Dearinger Main, she was born Feb. 26, 1902 in rural Searsboro.

She was married to Orville M. Springer April 30, 1932 in Newton.

A lifelong resident of Jasper County, she had been a resident of Newton since 1971. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, August 1991
