Maria Smyth, 92, of Newton died of a heart ailment Saturday at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Community reformed Church in Newton, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Smyth was born in Ireland, and had lived in Newton since 1949. Before retirement she was employed by the Vernon Co. She was a member of the order of the Eastern Star and the Jasper County Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Kalma and Florence Howell, both of Newton; a sister, Elizabeth Black of Belfast, Northern Ireland; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1994
