PRAIRIE CITY - Funeral services for Luther H. Schakel, 88, a longtime resident of Prairie City, were held today, Feb. 19, at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City.

The Rev. Mike Craighead of Pella conducted services. Burial was in Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

He died Saturday at the Des Moines General Hospital.

Survivors are a brother, Paul of Monroe; and a sister, Pearl Schakel of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary, and five brothers and sisters.

Mr. Schakel had been a longtime farmer in the Prairie City, Mitchellville and Altoona areas.

The son of Richard and Sophia De Long Schakel, he was born Dec. 24, 1901 in Mitchellville.

He was married to Mary Yowell March 10, 1934 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1990
