Lucien Van Elsen

COLFAX - Lucien Van Elsen, 79, a lifelong Colfax resident and former member of the Colfax Board of Education and Colfax City Council, died Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax.

The Rev. Tom Carpe, pastor of the church, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon today at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax and visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Skiff Medical Center Nurses Scholarship Fund in Newton or the Howard Street Christian Church will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Dorothy; five sons, Lucien L. of Brookfield, Wis., Henry E. of Newton, Robert E. of Lithia Springs, Ga., James of Colfax and Larry of Altoona; three daughters, Jean Van Elsen of Waterloo, Helen Reitan of Fairfax, Va., and Lyndia Brouwer of Newton; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Oscar and Arthur.

Mr. Van Elsen was a member of the Howard Street Christian Church, Colfax American Legion Post, the Colfax Senior Citizens and the Maytag Management Club in Newton.

The son of Henry and Celia Damerval Van Elsen, he was born Oct. 17, 1914 at Colfax and was a 1932 graduate of Colfax Community High School.

He was married to Dorothy Ellsworth June 25, 1936 at Colfax.

Mr. Van Elsen, a retired Maytag employee, was an army veteran of World War II. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1994
