COLFAX - Violet Lorraine Wallace Bankes, 70, of 118 Cherry St., Colfax, a resident of Colfax for more than 50 years, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 6, at Clearview Manor Nursing Home in Prairie City of complications following a stroke.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. Kenneth Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Mc Keever Cemetery, north of Colfax.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Tuesday and visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons, Mark and Sam, both of Oskaloosa; three daughters, Pat (Mrs. Larry) Cushatt, Helen (Mrs. David) Pratt and Susan (Mrs. Chester) Wallis, all of Colfax; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers, John Wallace of Runnells, Pete Wallace and Russell Wallace, both of Newton, and Arthur Wallace of Colfax.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Maynard, Oct. 4, 1992, a daughter, Norma Jean, in November, 1988, two brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Bankes, who attended the Church of Christ in Oskaloosa, had been employed by the Colfax Community School District for 12 years.

The daughter of Arthur "Sim" and Mollie Anderson Wallace, she was born Nov. 22, 1923 in Vandalia.

She was married to Maynard E. Bankes Nov. 30, 1940 in Colfax. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1994
