Ferne H. Lothe

Ferne H. Hesson Lothe, 97, a resident of Newton for 62 years, died Tuesday morning, April 9, at Careage of Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Reese Chapel.

The Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will conduct services. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the home after 3 p.m. today and family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First Presbyterian Church over the craft fund at Careage of Newton may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons, Alan and Burton, both of Newton; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Louis, in 1942, two sons, Duane and Darrell, three brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Lothe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Gates Circle and Emmonons History and Travel Department of the Newton Women's Club.

Mrs. Lothe taught rural schools in Minnesota prior to her marriage to Lewis Lothe May 31, 1923 in Center City, Minn.

She worked in the Jasper County auditor's office for many years before retirement.

The daughter of Harry and Zilpha Marsh Hesson, she was born Aug. 28, 1893 in Muscatine and attended Minnesota schools. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1991
