Noma L. Leonard

Funeral services for Noma L. Henderson Leonard, 83, of Careage of Newton, formerly of Mingo, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Mingo United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Ashton Chapel Cemetery, north of Mingo.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Mingo United Methodist Church.

She died Tuesday morning at Skiff Medical Center of heart failure.

Survivors are two sons, Gene A. of Mingo and George W. of Van Buren, Ark.; a daughter, Carolyn J. (Mrs. James B.) Hunt Jr. of Rock Ridge, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers, Lloyd Henderson and Mac Henderson Jr., both of Colfax, William "Frank" Henderson of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Wayne Henderson of Theodosia, Mo.; and four sisters, Celestine (Mrs. Don) Annis of Newton, Emily (Mrs. Archie) Bowans of Monroe, Dorothy Knapp of Brazoria, Texas, and Coleen Henderson of Hesperia, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl, Oct. 10, 1990, a daughter, Grace L. Bulley, three brothers, Harold, Curtis and Audrey, and a sister, Beulah Shatterman.

Mrs. Leonard, a homemaker had taught Jasper County rural schools.

She was a member of the Mingo United Methodist Church and a former Sunday school teacher and superintendent.

The daughter of Charles M. and Nora Curtis Henderson, she was born April 5, 1908 in Adrian, Mo., and was graduated from Mingo Community High School.

She was married to Carl A. Leonard Feb. 21, 1930 in Colfax.

Mrs. Leonard was a longtime resident of the Mingo area prior to moving to Newton in 1988. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, May 1991
