Carl A. Leonard, 82, of the Newton Health Care Center, a former longtime resident of the Mingo community, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the center of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mingo United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Ashton Chapel Cemetery, north of Mingo.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Mingo United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home or at the church.

Survivors are his wife, Norma L. of the Newton Health Care Center; two sons, gene A. of Mingo and George W. of Van Buren, Ark.; a daughter, Carolyn J. (Mrs. James B.) Hunt Jr. of Wilson, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Joe of Maxwell and Ralph of Mingo; and two sisters, Mary Leonard and Martha Leonard, both of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Grace L. Bulley, and a sister, Sarah De Reus.

Mr. Leonard, a prominent cattle feeder in the Mingo community, was an active member of the Mingo United Methodist Church, past president of the Mingo Community School Board and a past member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau. He had been a 4-H leader.

The son of Charles A. and Emma Streeter Leonard, he was born Dec. 9, 1907 in story County and was graduated from Mingo Community High School.

He was married to Mona L. Henderson Feb. 21, 1930 in Colfax. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1990
