BAXTER - Dr. Arthur E. Sterling, 92, of Colonial Manor Care Center in Baxter, a longtime resident of Newton and a dentist in Newton from 1917 until his retirement in 1975, died early today, April 29, at the Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Thursday. Visitation with the family will be held between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors are four grandsons, Scott Sterling of Brandon, Ga., and Eric Sterling, Brett Sterling and Blake Sterling, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and a sister, Olive Hammer of Madison, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Verna, in 1959, a son, Dr. Arthur H. Sterling in 1982 and four brothers,

Dr. Sterling was a member of the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ, a charter member of the Newton American Legion Post No. 111, a member of the 40 and 8, Post 283, a life member of the Elks Lodge 1270, past member and president of the Newton Community School Board, member of the Iowa Dental Association, charter member and past president of the Newton Rotary Club, past president of the Newton Red Cross, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star and a charter member of the Newton Noon Kiwanis Club.

Dr. Sterling, who came to Newton in 1919, was an Army veteran of World War I.

The son of David and Ida Carlson Sterling, he was born Dec. 27, 1893 in Madison, S.D., was graduated from Madison, S. D., High School and was graduated from the University of Iowa School of Dentistry at Iowa City in 1917.

He was married to Verna Iliss in 19200 in Eldora. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1986
