Harold R. Swihart

CHARITON - Harold R. Swihart, 59, of 429 S. Main St., Apt. 579, Chariton, formerly of Newton, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, at his home in Chariton of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Reese Chapel in Newton. Military graveside rites will be held at St. John's Cemetery, north of Newton.

Friends may call at Reese Funeral Home after 1 p.m. today.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Judy; a son, Scott, of Newton; two step-sons, Harold "J R" Rooker of Sealy, Texas, and Tim Rooker of Des Moines; two step-daughters, Ann Rooker Wilson of Brenam, Texas, and Stella Rooker Potter of Chariton; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and four brothers, Bill Swihart of Big Stone City, S.D., Wesley Swihart of Monroe, Elwyn Swihart of Newton and Gary Swihart of Wicamica, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and an infant son.

Mr. Swihart, a member of the American Legion Post 229 of Chariton, had served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a former employee of the Maytag Co.

The son of Morris and Metha Griebel Swihart, he was born May 13, 1930 in Newton and attended Newton schools.

He was married to Judy Holmes Nov. 21, 1979 in Newton.

Mr. Swihart had moved to Chariton two years ago from Springfield, Ill. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1990
