Arthur Swihart Dies Saturday; Services Today

BAXTER - Funeral services for Arthur B. Swihart, 81, a lifelong resident of a farm southeast of Baxter, were held today at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton.

The Rev. Phillip Friedeman, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Military services were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 111 and the Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1655 in Newton.

He died Saturday morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.

Survivors are his wife, Nellie; a son, Donald of Baxter; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Virginia) Mee of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Swihart of Newton; and a sister, Mrs. Carroll (Beulah) Streeter of Swarthmore, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jean Rerecich of Bainbridge Island, Wash., a sister, Amber Stow, and a half-sister, Beth Landis.

Mr. Swihart was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, Oak Ridge Grange, Jasper County Farm Bureau, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1655, American Legion Post No. 111, the Izaak Walton League and The Last Man's Club.

He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the AEF in France.

The son of Eli and Anna Deutsch Swihart, he was born Nov. 20, 1896 near Baxter.

He was married to Nellie F. Harris Aug. 23, 1922 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, June 1978
