Elizabeth Lester Dies Wednesday; Services Friday

Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Lester, 97, of Heritage Manor, a resident of Newton since 1959, died Wednesday afternoon at the Heritage Manor.

Graveside rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Barnes City Cemetery.

The Rev. Ray Barnett, pastor of the First Christian Church in Newton, will conduct services.

Friends may call at the Wallace Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today.

Survivors are a son-in-law, Leo Griggs of Newton; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Walter (Anna) Lester and Mrs. Edward (Lela) Lester, both of Newton; and three grandchildren, Mrs. Warren (Margie) Maholl of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Mrs. Robert (Julie) Verwers of Corpus Christi, Tex., and Leon Lester of Stigler, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1959; a daughter, Beth Griggs in 1971; a son, Walter, in 1976; a son, Edward, in 1978; a granddaughter, Judith Lester Garner; three sisters and three brothers.

The daughter of Isaac and Eleanora Warwick Williams, she was born Dec. 24, 1880 in Barnes City.

She was married Feb. 20, 1898 at the family home near Barnes City.

Mrs. Lester, a member of the Christian Church, spent most of her life on a farm near Barnes City, moving to Newton following the death of her husband. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, June 1978
