PORTLAND, Ore. - Memorial services for Bob Woodburn Jr., 71, of Portland, Ore., vice president and general manager of United Telephone of Iowa in Newton from 1965 to 1970, were held Saturday, Dec. 18, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland.

Memorials to Elks Children's Eye Clinic, Oregon Common Cause or the organization of the donor's choice will be accepted.

He died at this home of natural causes.

Survivors are his wife, Betty; three sons, Steven of Milton, Wash., Bill of Hood River, Ore., and Terry of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Woodburn was with the Oregon Public Utilities Commission from 1948 to 1954, was senior financial officer for Ketchikan, Alaska, Public Utilities and worked from 1958 to 1965 for the United telephone Co. in Hood River, Ore. From 1965 through 1974 he served as vice president and general manager for United Telephone Co. in Newton and Kansas City, Kan., and finished his career as general manager for Contel's Midwest Group in Lorain, Ohio, and Fort Dodge. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Woodburn, who served as president of the Lorain, Ohio, Chamber of Commerce, was a longtime member of the Elks Club, Telephone Pioneer's Association, Jaycees, 8th Air Force Historical Society, Willamette University and Phi Delta Theta Alumni Events.

Following his retirement in Sunriver and Portland, Ore., he was active in the Oregon Republican Part, Citizen's Utility Board and was a board member of Oregon Common Cause.

Mr. Woodburn enjoyed fishing, golf, travel and sports card collecting.

Mr. Woodburn, who served in the 8th Air Force in England and France during World War II, was born Jan. 17, 1922 in Portland, Ore., was graduated from Salem High School in 1940, where he became a high school state boxing champion, and was graduated from Willamette University in Salem in 1948.

He was married to Betty Jean Paulsen in 1947 in Salem, Ore. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1993
