Stella E. Bates Wendt, 88, of 503 E. 3rd St. S., died Saturday morning, Oct. 2, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Tuesday and visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials in her name will be accepted.

Survivors are a daughter, Jacqueline (Mrs. Edward) Stanek of Des Moines; and two grandsons, Edward Jason and Sean Robert Stanek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, August, Feb. 26, 1981, and 12 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Wendt, a member of the First United Methodist Church and past member of the Newton Civic Orchestra, had taught school in Brazil and Mystic and was a cashier and bookkeeper at the Newton Woolworth Store until 1936.

The daughter of John Grant and May Agnes Boyd Bates, she was born June 18, 1905 in Brazil and was a 1921 graduate of Centerville Community High School.

She was married to August P. Wendt June 4, 1936 in Newton.

Mrs. Wendt lived in Newton from 1925 until 1936 and then in Fort Dodge, Ottumwa and Davenport. She moved back to Newton in 1981. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1993
