Emma Mitrisin Thomas, 94, of Nelson Manor Nursing Home, a longtime resident of Newton, died Sunday evening, May 2, at the manor.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The Rev. Ernest Braida, pastor of the church will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Wake services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Tuesday and visitation with the family will be held following wake services.

Memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church will be accepted.

Survivors are two nieces, Irene (Mrs. Simon) Gates of Newton, who had lived with Mrs. Thomas for several years, and Dorothy Green of Newton; and a nephew, Thomas Barnes of Newton; a number of other nieces and nephews; a brother, George A. Mitrisin of Oskaloosa; and a sister, Susan Barnes of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Edgar S. Thomas, in 1965, a step-son, Willard Thomas, a brother and five sisters.

Mrs. Thomas, a homemaker, was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Society and the Lady Elks.

The daughter of George and Anna Dursky Mitrisin, she was born June 15, 1898 in Mahaska County and attended Hazel Dell School in rural Oskaloosa.

She was married to Edgar S. Thomas April 13, 1929 in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, May 1993
