George C. Swihart

George C. Swihart, 88, of Newton, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Wednesday evening, July 21, at Heritage Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

Doug Reynolds of the Wittemberg Church will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Friday.

Memorials in his name may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two step-daughters, Greta Koppin of Newton and Janilou Foster of Bettendorf; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Thelma Culver, his second wife, Edna Miller in 1988, three brothers, Raymond, Morris and Walter; a sister, Patience Osterhagen, and a daughter, Coreice in 1936 in infancy.

Mr. Swihart, a farmer and cattle breeder on a farm north of Newton, was member of the Newton Elks Lodge, BPOE 1270.

The son of John W. and Nevada F. Munn Swihart, he was born July 6, 1905 in rural Newton and was a 1924 graduate of Baxter Community High School.

He was married to Edna Green Miller March 4, 1938 in Missouri. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, July 1993
