A. E. Sweet

A. E. "Gene" Sweet, 82, of 1012 S. 13th Ave. W., a resident of Newton since 1943, died Friday evening, Dec. 31, at his home of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today and visitation with the family will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and at the church after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Memorials to the First Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, James R. of Lisle, Ill.; a daughter, Deborah (Mrs. James) Maughan of Youngstown, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Jane (Mrs. LeRoy) Brissman of Rock Island, Ill.; and a special friend, Katherine Stone of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy, May 10, 1988 and a sister, Naomi S. Denny of Sullivan, Ill.

Mr. Sweet, a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Maytag Management Club, was manager of equipment and tooling at the Maytag Co., retiring in Oct. 31, 1976 after 33 years with the company.

The son of James Riley and Verde Prudence Cohee Sweet, he was born Oct. 21, 1911 in Mulberry, Ind., and was graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

He was married to Dorothy Elizabeth Mulinaux May 17, 1941 in Davenport. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1993
