PRAIRIE CITY - Carl Stripe Jr., 67, of Pleasant Hill (Des Moines, a former resident of the Prairie City area, died Monday, Oct. 18, at the Des Moines General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Prairie City United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Karen Merrill will conduct services.

Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery south of Prairie City.

Friends may call after noon today at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City and visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Heart Fund will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Betty; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce of Crystal, Minn., and Kerry and Lenelle of Damascus, Ark.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carla Stripe of Alameda, Calif., and Vanessa and Duane Sloan of Monroe; and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Norma Weidenhast of Omaha, Neb., MaDonna Mc Vey of Centerville and Carolyn Riggle of Des Moines and two brothers, Bill of Des Moines and Loren of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Hildreth Keller and Wilma Lawrence, and two brothers, Max and Millard.

Mr. Stripe, who retired from the inventory department at Eagle Iron Works in Des Moines, also had worked at Des Moines Steel.

The Son of Carl and Odessa Sheets Stripe, he was born Nov. 5, 1925 at Cambria.

He was a 1944 graduate of Humeston High School.

He was married to Betty Hughes March 20, 1949.

Mr. Stripe, who had resided in Pleasant Hill (Des Moines) since 1964, had served in the Rhineland and central Europe as a member of the army during World War II. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1993
