Lawrence H. Smith

KNOXVILE - Lawrence Harold Smith, 71, of Knoxville, a former resident of Prairie City, died Wednesday, April 28, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City of pneumonia.

Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.

Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

Memorials in his name will be accepted.

Survivors are three daughters, Leann Smith-Berrends of Monroe, Ronda Kruger of Clarion and Susanne Mickelson of Ankeny; a step-daughter, Jolaine Tjarks of Cherokee; seven grandsons; and a step-grandson.

Also surviving are a brother, Bernard of Winnebago, Minn.; and three sisters, Bea Barnes of Winnebago, Minn., Audrey Heiman St. Cloud, Minn., and Myrtle Meyer of Mountain Lake, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Elizia Smith.

Mr. Smith, a policeman at Alden during the 1950s and 1960s, was chief of police in Prairie City at the time of his retirement in 1987.

The son of Lee and Lottie Mae Becker Smith, he was born May 13, 1921 in Winnebago, Minn.

Mr. Smith resided in Prairie City for several years. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1993
