Funeral services for Edith Irene Wilson Smith, 87, a resident of the Newton Health Care Center since June, 1986, were held today, May 10, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Harold Schutte, pastor of the First Assembly of God of Oskaloosa, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

She died Friday morning at the center.

Survivors are as, Wayne Smith of East Peoria, Ill.; a brother, Laurel B. Wilson of Newton; and a sister, Ruby Trent of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth, January 11, 1977, a daughter, Leona Fern Wilson, two brothers, Leslie and Clyde Wilson, and a sister, Fern Hallam.

Mrs. Smith, a member of the First Assembly of God, worked as a salesperson in retail stores in Newton for many years.

The daughter of Bert and Lydia Emma Bigley Wilson, she was born March 28, 1906 near Reasnor.

She was married to Kenneth Perry Smith July 16, 1930 in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, May 1993
