Darrell Hanke, 5, Drowns, in River Sunday Afternoon

Falls Into Water While Playiong On Banks of North River Near Norwalk

Darrell Wayne Hanke, 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Merlo Hanke of Newton, drowned Sunday afternoon after falling from the bank the North river, seven miles south of Des Moines.

The boy had been playing with several other children, including his three sisters, on the farm of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Logan near Norwalk. Warned by his parents not to go near the river which is running his, ? had disobeyed the ? . Darrell slipped off the banl into about six feet of water.

He was recovered by Sheriff ? Johnson of Warren county ?. ?hood, special Polk county ? Highway Patrolman ? Horan about two hours after the tragedy occurred.

Marilyn Hanke, Darrell’s seven-year-old sister, ran a quarter of a mile to the farm house to bring help. Darlene Stover, 10, of Des Moines, a cousin, failed in an attempt to reach the drowning from the bank.

?mond Knudson of Des Moines who was picnicking nearby the accident, heard the terrified screams for help, and jumped into the river in an attempt ? youngster. He returned exhausted after an unsuccessful search.

Services will be held at Murdoch Funeral home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Dr. ? of the First Methodist Church will be in charge of the service. Burial will be in Newton Union cemetery.

Hanke was born May 11, 1935 in Des Moines, but had lived since then near Newton. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merlo Hanke, three sisters, Beverly, Marilyn, 7, and Vyrlee, ?. Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. of Norwalk, and Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Hanke of Newton.

Also by several uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kracht of ?, Mr. and Mrs. Alvah Hanke of Mitchellville, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hanke of Des Moines and Mrs. Lee Christian? Of Norwalk, Mr. and Mrs. ? of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. ?yle of Des Moines, and Mrs. Lloyd Stover of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hanke of Des Moines and 15 cousins. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 20, 1941. Services Held for Darrell Hanke

Funeral services for Darrell Wayne Hanke, 5, who drowned Sunday afternoon, Oct. 19, were conducted at the Murdoch Funeral Home in Newton, Wednesday Oct. 22, at 2 o’clock.

Rev. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the First Methodist church was in charge of the rites. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Leo Udelhoven and Mrs. E. R. Forbes. Mrs. L. B. Logan accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson sang “Jesus Loves Me” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Kenneth Logan, Jimmie Logan and Kenneth Hanke and Earl Hanke served as pallbearers.

He was born in Des Moines, May 11, 1935, but had lived since then near Newton. Immediate relatives surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merlo Hanke, three sisters, Beverly, Marilyn and Vyrlee, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E.
