ATLANTIC — Marvel J. Van Ginkel, 88, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at her home in Atlantic.

Marvel Jeannette Van Ginkel was born May 8, 1919,to John R. and Edith F. (Hummel) Crumpacker in Monroe.

After graduating from Monroe High School, she attended Simpson College in Indianola and was a member of Delta Delta Delta Women’s Fraternity. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Chapter BH of P.E.O Sisterhood.

On June 28, 1953, Marvel married James Van Ginkel in Monroe. They moved to Atlantic in 1956. Marvel worked as a telephone operator, was employed by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Washington, D.C., during WWII and was a bookkeeper for auto dealers and a homemaker.

She was also a long-time volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Mobile, as well as the Republican Party, a Cub Scout leader, 4-H leader and a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on many committees including the Board of Trustees.

Surviving Marvel is her husband, James of Atlantic; three children, son, James Carol (J.C.) and his wife Marci and their sons, James Cohron and John Cohron of Atlantic, daughter Jane Ann and her husband Charles Carradine and their daughters, Christine Marie and Catherine Elizabeth of Austin, Texas, and son Dr. John Christian Van Ginkel of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and a sister, Jane Fennema of Monroe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Russell (J.R.) and Edith Hummel Crumpacker of Monroe.

The family is requesting that memorials go to the Nishna Valley Family YMCA, the Wesley Heritage House and the United Methodist Church all in Atlantic.
