Dorothy Van Arkel, 79, of Newton died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.

Funeral services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton with the Rev. Ken Krause officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Sunday at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Jasper County and left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service.

The daughter of Engel and Dena (Breukelman) Van Zee, she was born Dec. 30, 1927, in New Holland, S.D. She grew up in New Holland and was united in marriage to William Van Arkel on Sept. 17, 1947, in New Holland, and the couple moved to Newton. She provided in-home day care for 24 years and was a homemaker.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting, gardening, fishing and being a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church.

She is survived by her husband of Newton; a daughter, Rhonda (Scott) Morrill of Altoona; a son, Bob (Kim) Van Arkel of Newton; two grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanette Van Der Heiden of Newton and Gertrude (Ed) Slings of Newton; three brothers, John (Genevia) Van Zee of Pella, Ed (Andi) Van Zee of Newton and Riley (Pearl) Van Zee of Newton; three sisters-in-law, Irene Van Zee of Marshalltown, Frances Van Zee of Grand Haven, Mich., and Mary Lou Van Zee of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Leroy, Ray, Virgil and Herman.
