Rider, Violet Florence (Dodd) 1925-2007

Violet Florence Rider, 81, the daughter of Lester A. and Violet (Phillips) Dodd, passed away on June 15, 2007, at her home in Newton. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling the arrangements.

She was born July 3, 1925, in rural Colfax. She attended school in the Colfax and Newton areas, and was a high school graduate.

On Aug. 28, 1943, she was united in marriage with Don L. Rider in Newton. She devoted her life to her family and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton. She was employed by J.C. Pennys, Automatic Washer Company, the Vernon Company, Winpower Manufacturing Company and the Maytag Company. She enjoyed raising flowers and sewing.

She is survived by her husband, Don of Newton; two sons, Ronald (Connie Sue) Rider of Cedar Rapids and Jeffery (Connie Jean) Rider of Newton; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother-in-law, Harold Freeborn of Des Moines; three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Phelps of Newton, Beverly Dodd of Newport Richey, Fla., and Gladys Dodd of West Hartford, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Thomas, Phillip, Donald, Galen and Edward; and one sister, Barbara Dodd.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Newton, with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. The family will greet friends following the services with a coffee time in the fellowship hall at the First Christian Church in Newton. Burial will be at a later date in the Restland Cemetery in Baxter.
