Dorothy C. “Jeanne” Paschal Rhodes, 86, of Newton died Tuesday, May 22, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family also will greet friends immediately following the memorial service at the church with a lunch. A private family burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Lewy Body Dementia Research may be left at the funeral home or at the church the afternoon of the service.

The daughter of Albert and Leila (Stewart) Chapman, she was born April 27, 1921, in Jasper County. She graduated from Newton High School in 1940 and worked for several years in the Product Testing Department at the Maytag Company. On May 9, 1942, she married Jack V. Paschal in Newton. She also was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, TTT, past member of Newton Chapter No. 100 Order of Eastern Star; PTA; and past mother adviser of the Rainbow Girls.

Following her husband’s death, she married Luther H. Rhodes on Sept. 4, 1970, in Newton. Jeanne helped Luther with square dance lessons, and she enjoyed her family, bowling, fishing, traveling and china painting. Jeanne had lived in Tucson, Ariz, for 30 years prior to moving back to Newton in the fall of 2005.

Survivors include her husband, Luther, of Newton; three daughters, Jackie (Norman) Kool of Cedar Rapids, Paula Meyer of Waukee and Beth Current of Marietta, Ga.; three step-sons, Stephen (Judy) Rhodes of Iowa City, David (Edna) Rhodes of Wonewoc, Wis., and Nelson (Mary) Rhodes of Dickson, N.M.; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Jack Paschal, in 1965; a daughter, Julie Paschal in 2003; a brother, Don Chapman; and a sister, Ruth Chapman.
