George S. Townsend

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Memorial services for George S. Townsend, 65, of 4011 Lamont, San Diego, Claif., formerly of Baxter and State Center, were held today, May 10, at El Camino Mortuary in San Diego.

He died Monday at Schripps University Hospital of cancer.

Survivors are his wife, Ruth; a brother, Harold of Baxter; and five sisters, June (Mrs. Lorren) Hardenburgh of Baxter, Mae (Mrs. Glen) Eckhart of Melbourne, Lucile (Mrs. George) Severidt of State Cetner, Wilma (Mrs. Dale) Eckhart of State Center and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Jack) Gray of Rhodes.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Townsend, a farmer in the State Center area until 1954 and a carpenter in Baxter until January, 1961, was employed by Schripps Oceanography University for 28 years until retiring.

He was a veretan of World War II.

The son of George Henry and Mary Carson Townsend, he was born Aug. 26, 1925 in Jasper County and was educated in State Center schools.

He was married to Ruth Halverson of Laurel Aug. 25, 1956 and the couple lived in Baxter until moving to San Diego in January, 1961. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, May 1991
