Services Friday for Al Nuzum

Al Nuzum, 78, a former Baxter resident died Tuesday, December 28, at the Meridian Care Center in Ormand Beach, Fl.

Visitation will be Thursday from 7:00 - 8:00 at the Beldelman Funeral Home on Hwy. 44 in Panora.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 31st at Church Of The Brethren in Panora. Burial will be in Maxwell.

A. L. Nuzum

BAXTER - A. L. "Al" Nuzum, 78, a former longtime resident of the Baxter area and former Jasper County businessman and conservationist, died of cancer Tuesday morning, Dec. 28, at Meridian Nursing Home in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Mr. Nuzum, who owned and operated the Al Nuzum Supply Co. in Baxter for 32 years, was an original member of the Jasper County Conservation Commission. As such, he was instrumental in the purchase of both Mariposa Park and Ashton-Wildwood Park.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Brethren in Panora. Burial will be held in Maxwell.

Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Beidelman Funeral Home in Panora.

Memorials to the Panora Church of the Brethren may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Mazie of 12 King Grand Road, Apt. 206, Holly Hill, Fla. 32117; two sons, Bob of Mesquite, Texas, and Bruce of Newton; a daughter, Lorra Waters of Ormond Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Al "Bill" Jr., a grandson, a granddaughter and a brother, Wayne.

He was a former member of the Bethany United Church of Christ, east of Baxter, and the Baxter American Legion and was a member of Panora Church of the Brethren, for which he served as chairman of the board and founded the mission board, and the Panora American Legion.

He was an army veteran of World War II.

The son of Lindsay G. and Fannie L. Nuzum, he was born March 29, 1915.

He was married to Mazie Richards in 1936, whom he met while a student at the University of Iowa at Iowa City.

The Nuzums recently moved from a home on Lake Panorama to Florida. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1993
