Clarence Nikkel

LAUREL - Clarence "Clair" Nikkel, 61, of Rt. 1, Box 64, Laurel, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Monday, April 30, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center following a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sully Christian Reformed Church.

Dr. Joseph Brinks, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. John Claussen, pastor of the Park Avenue Christian Church in Des Moines, will conduct services. Burial will be in Sully Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials in his name will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Betty; three sons, Corey, Troy and Tony, all at home; three brothers, Joe and Melvin, both of Sully, and Norman of Searsboro; and a sister, Matilda "Sis" (Mrs. Gerrit) Roozeboom of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bernie, and two sisters.

Mr. Nikkel, a self-employed will driller since 1972, previously had been a well driller for Verwers in Sully.

A member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church and Laurel American Legion, Mr. Nikkel was a veteran of the Korean conflict.

The son of John P. and Lizzie Baarda Nikkel, he was born Nov. 13, 1928 in Sully.

He was married to Betty Gene Van Soelen Nov. 24, 1972 in the little brown church in Nashua. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1990
