M. Ray Nichol

M. Ray Nichol, 71, of 413 E. 25th St. N., a resident of Newton since Novmbr 1980, died Sunday morning, Feb. 17 at the Skiff Medical Center of complications of emphysema

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerri Brown, senior pastor of the church, will conduct services.

Veterans services will be conducted by the Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Tuesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home or at the church.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Lou; a son, Doug of Toledo, Ohio; a daughter, Dixie (Mrs. Rick) Bonte of Belmond; seven grandchildren; a brother, Walter of Knoxville; and three sisters, Margaret Stohlman of Sacramento, Calif., Verba Rene (Mrs. Lloyd) Dodd of Baxter and Irene Bartholomew of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mary Harre, Alice Pierce and Betty Nichol in infancy, and two brothers, Reuben Nichol and Arnold "Bud" Nichol.

Mr. Nichol, a World War II Army veteran, had served in the European theater and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.

The son of Andrew and Viola Maude Williams Nichol, he was born Dec. 6, 1919 in State Center and attended Rhodes schools and Collins Community High School.

He was married to Mary Lou Schmidt Nov. 21, 1942 in Manhattan, Kan.

Mr. Nichol had resided in Marshalltown for two years prior to moving to the farm Northwest of Newton in November, 1947. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1991
