Salem, Ore. - Jesse E. Neal, 78, of Salem, Ore., a former resident of Newton and graduate of Newton Community High School,died Sunday, Oct. 10, at a Salem hospital.

Cremation was held.

Survivors are his wife, Mabel; two sons, Eugene and Owen, both of Dallas, Ore., five grandchildren; and three sisters, Bette Thompson and Winifred Sisco, both of Newton, and Doris Schenher of Goshen, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters and brothers.

Mr. Neal, a sawmill worker in Salem at the time of his retirement, lived in Valsetz and Dallas, Ore., before moving to Salem.

The son of Frank and Gail Miller Neal, he was born Jan. 17, 1915 in Newton and was a 1933 graduate of Newton Community High School.

He was married to Mabel Ruth Robertson in 1934 in Newton.

He played trombone in the Salem Senior Citizens Band and, while a resident of Newton, played in the high school and Municipal Bands, winning numerous awards for his proficency in music. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1993
