MONROE - Jennie Poortinga Nearmyer, 84, of Monroe, a lifelong resident of the Monroe-Prairie City area, died Thursday, June 6, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Monroe First Baptist Church.

The Rev. John Adams, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials to the Monroe First Baptist Church will be accepted.

Friends may call at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe. Visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Survivors are her husband, Willis; a daughter, Darlene (Mrs. Jack D.) Martin of Newton; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Walker of Norwalk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Edity Nearmyer, two brothers, Frank and John, and an infant grandson.

The daughter of George and Katie Meyers Poortinga, she was born May 29, 1907 in Marion County and was a 1925 graduate of Monroe Community High School.

She was married to Willis Nearmyer Oct. 7, 1929 in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, June 1991
