Marion Van Wyk

OTLEY - Marion Van Wyk, 77, a native of Sully and longtime resident of the Otley area, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Pella Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Otley Reformed Church.

The Rev. David Hensley, pastor of the church, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Memorials to the Mission Fund at Apache, Okla., will be accepted.

Family visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home.

Survivors are his wife, Tunnet; four sons, Melvin and Francis "Fry," both of Des Moines, Ronnie of Melcher and Marvin of Otley; two daughters, Mary Lou (Mrs. Ronald) Van Roekel and JoAnn (Mrs. James) Schroder, both of Otley; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Bert of Pella and David of Sully; and four sisters, Carrie (Mrs. John) Braaksma of Newton, Jennette (Mrs. Max) Antle of Sully, Mary Grace (Mrs. Henry) Terlouw of Grinnell and Faye (Mrs. Gerrit) Stouwie of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, William, Cornie and Henry, and four sisters, Mattie (Mrs. Garritt) De Hoedt, Minnie (Mrs. Ben) Ver Steegt, Gertrude (Mrs. James) Ver Steegt and Alenis (Mrs. Rex) Brush.

Mrs. (typed as written, should be Mr.) Van Wyk, a member of the Otley Reformed Church, was a member of the Men's Brotherhood and was a 4-H leader for 20 years.

The son of Gysbert and Gertrude Van Arkle Van Wyk, he was born June 6, 1915 in Sully.

He was raised and educated in the Sully area.

He was married to Tunnet Van Zante Nov. 27, 1940 at the home of her parents near Otley.

They farmed a quarter mile east of Otley until 1943 when they moved to the Van Zante family farm 1 1/2 miles northwest of Otley.

Even after their retirement from farming in 1980, they continued to live on the family farm.

Mr. Van Wyk also drove a school bus, sold various brands of seed corn and did carpentry work. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1992
