PELLA - Jerry Vander Schel, 83, of Pella, a former resident of Prairie City, died Wednesday noon, Sept. 23, at the Pella Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Third Reformed Church in Pella.

The Rev. Ralph Menning, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.

Friends may call at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella this evening and all day Friday. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Hospice of Pella will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, June; two sons, Robert L. of Kellogg and Melvin F. of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

Also surviving are a sister, Tressa Schultz of Arizona; and brother, Cyrus of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta, Dec. 8, 1991, his parents, and a brother, George.

Mr. Vander Schel, who moved to Pella from the Prairie City area in 1935, had been in the trucking business for a number of years, was co-owner of the West End Gas Station in Pella prior to going into business with his son, Melvin, in a gas station in south Pella. Later Mr. Vander Schel and his son operated the Vogelaar Hardware Store in Pella.

Later Mr. Vander Schel worked for the City of Pella water department and from 1959 to 1970 Mr. Vander Schel and his wife were custodians of the Third Reformed Church in Pella.

A lontime member of the Third Reformed church, Mr. Vander Schel was a member of choir and Men's Brotherhood, had been a deacon and elder of the church and was a member of the church planning and development committee of the Classis of Pella. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

The son of Gerrit and Grace Nieuwenhuis Vander Schel, he was born Jan. 9, 1909 in The Netherlands and was educated in Washington Grade School near Prairie City.

He was married to Henrietta Klyn Aug. 14, 1929 in Oskaloosa and to June Douglas Aug. 8, 1992 in Pella. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1992
