Bascum Umbarger, Lontime resident, Dies Early Today

Bascum Benton Umbarger, 74, of 1112 S. 6th Ave. E., a resident of Newton for 60 years, died this morning at the Knoxville Veterans Administration Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Wallace Funeral Home.

The Rev. Paul Aiken, pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Saturday.

Survivors are his wife, Julie; three sons, Don and William, both of Newton, and Michael of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Mrs. Max (Gretchen) Klootwyk of Marshalltown and Mrs. Tom (Joyce) Tripp and Mrs. Jack (Sandra) Herwehe, both of Newton; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Oscar of Newton; and two sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Nina) Anthony of Torrance, Calif., and Mrs. Lyle (Thelma) Wilcox of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Mr. Umbarger, a retired Maytag Co. machine shop employee, was a member of the Maytag 25-Year Club.

The son of Henry and a Estella Buchanan Umbarger, he was born January 27, 1904 at Rural Retreat, Va.

He was married to Julie Boyer July 26, 1941 at Unionville, Mo. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, July 1978
