Virginia T. Johnson

Virginia T. Smith Johnson, 73, of 2201 S. 3rd Ave. E., a longtime resident of Newton, died Saturday morning, Aug. 31, at Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerome Egel, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Survivors are a son, William S. of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Dixie (Mrs. Robert) Boettcher of Marion; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two brothers, William Smith of Bettendorf and Lowell Smith of Rowland Heights, Calif.; and a sister, Mary White of San Gabriel, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John, Feb. 28, 1990.

Mrs. Johnson, an employee of the Vernon Co., for more than 25 years prior to her retirement July 31, 1980, had been a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Izaak Walton League Ikettes.

The daughter of Lowell and Zora Thomas Smith, she was born Sept. 23, 1918 in Tracy and was graduated of Newton Community High School.

She was married to John Leslie Johnson Sept. 27, 1937 in Altoona. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, August 1991
