Roy H. Johnson

Funeral services for Roy Herman Johnson, 69, of 2205 S. 7th Ave. E., a longtime resident of Newton, were held this morning at the Wallace Funeral Home.

Dr. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, conducted services. Burial was in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Military services will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreigh Wars Post 1655.

He died Friday morning at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from injuries sustained in a moped accident 10 days ago.

Memorial contributions to a fund in Mr. Johnson's name will be accepted. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are four step-sons, William Ely of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif., Harold Dean Ely and Donald Ely, both of Newton, and Edward Ely of Des Moines; 14 step-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Gertrude, Sept. 28, 1975, two sisters and three brothers.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655, Jasper County Sheriff's Reserve and Izaak Walton League.

A member of the Jasper County Sheriff's Reserve for a number of years, he was employed at the Maytag Co., until retiring in 1975.

He had served in the European Theater with the Army during World War II.

The son of Henry and Ruth Wire Johnson, he was born Aug. 27, 1913 in Cambridge and was educated in Cambridge schools.

He was married to Gertrude Kelley Ely, Sept. 13, 1963 in Marshalltown. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, August 1983
