John L. Johnson

John Leslie Johnson, 72, of 2201 S. 3rd Ave. E., a longtime resident of Newton, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 28, at Skiff Medical Center of pneumonia and heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerome Egel, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Friday.

Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Virginia; a son, William of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Dixie (Mrs. Robert) Boettcher of Marion; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Merle Johnson of Ash Fork, Ariz., and Don Johnson of Dallas, Texas; and two sisters, Florence Brochin of Connersville, Ind., and Betty Jean Johnson of Las Vegas, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Kenneth, and two sisters, Mildred Sawyer and Frances Larrison.

Mr. Johnson, an employee of the Vernon Co. for 34 years, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Jasper County Senior Citizens and was a life member of the Newton Elks Lodge and the Izaak Walton League.

The son of William and Winifred Cowan Johnson, he was born April 15, 1917 in Adel, attended Newton schools and was graduated from newton Community High School.

He was married to Virginia Theresa Smith Sept. 27, 1937 in Altoona. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1990
