Woman Dies At Monroe At 92 Years
MONROE, IA - Mrs. Judy Ett Yoakum, 92-year-old pioneer woman of Iowa and Illinois died early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah C. Wilks at Monroe. She had been bedfast for the last seven years caused by rheumatism of the knees. County Coroner Ralph V. Toland pronounced death due to her advanced age.
Judy Ett Yoakum was the daughter of Caroline Wiseman Yoakum, the woman who is said to have refused Abraham Lincoln's proposal of marriage. Judy Ett was born in Sangamon county, Ill., on Jan. 20, 1848, and at the age of three years came to Monroe, Jasper County, with her parents.
There she lived with her parents on the virgin soil on a homestead farm west of Monroe. She married her cousin, James W. Yoakum, and shortly after moved back to Sangamon County, Ill., the home county of Abraham Lincoln.
Three children born to the couple are still living. They are Mrs. Sarah C. Wilks of Monroe, with whom she made her home, Mrs. D. B. Kane of Fairmount and John I. Yoakum of Monroe. Three grandchildren are Leonard Kane and Perry Kane of Newton and George Kane of Monroe. There are also several great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Caroline Fouch of Monroe, and three brothers, Isaac N. of Duluth, Minn., George Thomas of Newton and William F. Yoakum of Monroe.
