GRINNELL - Funeral services for Edith Dorothy Poortinga Nearmyer, 81, of St. Francis Manor in Grinnell and a former resident of the Monroe and Newton communities, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Monroe First Baptist Church.

The Rev. John Adams, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe.

Memorials to the church or St. Francis Manor in Grinnell will be accepted.

She died Monday at St. Francis Manor.

Survivors are a daughter, Jean (Mrs. Ray) Linthicum of Newton; a son, Ronald of Grinnell; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jennie (Mrs. Willis) Nearmyer of Monroe and Evelyn Walker of Norwalk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant son and two brothers, Frank Poortinga and John Poortinga.

Mrs. Nearmyer, a member of the Monroe First Baptist Church, had resided at St. Francis Manor since 1986.

The daughter of George and Katie Meyers Poortinga, she was born May 26, 1909 in Marion County.

She was married to Keith Nearmyer March 3, 1928 in Monroe. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1991
