John Hughes

Funeral services for John Hughes, 90, of 601 Hazel Avenue in Newton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. Robert Hinshaw, pastor of the Ashton Chapel in rural Mingo, will conduct services.

Burial will be in McKeever Cemetery in rural Colfax.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Friday. Visitation with the family 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes died Tuesday night July 16, at Des Moines ____ Hospital in Des Moines.

A lifelong resident of Jasper County, Mr. Hughes was born Mach 9, 1906, in rural Colfax. He was the son of David and Emma Stienberger Hughes.

He was married to Carrie Mae McKeever Oct. 4 1933.

Mr. Hughes was a gardner at the Maytag home for 15 years, worked at the Ordinance Plant in Ankeny and the Automatic Washer factory in Newton. He was also a tool and die maker at Maytag before retiring in 1972 with 23 years of service. He was a member of the UAW local 997 and a past member of the Izaak Walton League.

Survivors are his wife, two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Pat, of Monroe and Roy of Urbandale; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
