Florence E. Thorsen, 95 of Newton died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Careage of Newton. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Thorsen, a lifelong resident of Newton, retired as operator supervisor at United Telephone Co. and was a member at First Christian Church, Navy Mothers and American Legion Auxiliary.

Among survivors are two sons, Thomas of Des Moines and Robert of Newton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to her church.

Funeral services for Florence E. Jackson Thorson, 95, of Careage of Newton, formerly of Mc Cann Village, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Ray Barnett, pastor of the First Christian Church, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday and visitation with family will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday. Memorials to the First Christian Church will be accepted.

She died Tuesday morning at Careage of Newton.

Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Wilma L. of Des Moines and Robert and LaVonne M. of Newton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Thomas, in 1968, sister, Grace Mc Kinney, and a brother, George Jackson.

Mrs. Thorson was a member of the First Christian Church, Opal Circle of the church, Navy Mothers and American Legion Auxiliary.

A homemaker, she had worked as an operator supervisor at the United Telephone Co. in Newton.

The daughter of Jerrie and Cora Trefren Jackson, she was born Oct. 30, 1899 in Newton and attended Palo Alto District rural Newton school.

She was married to Thomas Thorson Sept. 1, 1923 in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1995
