Howard William Thies, 85, of Newton died of a heart ailment Friday at Skiff Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.

Mr. Thies was born in Hardy and had lived in Newton since 1992. He was a retired farmer, a World War II veteran and a member of First United Methodist Church in Shell Rock and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Marion; two sons, Craig of Newton and Brian of Hampton; a daughter, Barbara Sturgell of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a brother, Robert of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Dorothy Thies of Denver and Ruth Benton of Janesville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for Howard William Thies, 85, 500 1St St. N., a resident of Newton since 1992, were held today, Dec. 19, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church, conducted services.

Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.

Memorials in his name will be accepted.

He died Friday evening at Skiff Medical Center of heart failure.

Survivors are his wife, Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Maydene of Hampton and Craig and Patricia of Newton; a daughter Barbara Sturgell of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brother, Robert of Denver, Iowa; two sisters, Dorothy Thies of Denver, Iowa and Ruth Benton of Janesville; two nieces; and six nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Mr. Thies, a veteran of world war two, was a member of the Shell rock first United Methodist Church and the show rocked a very slight American Legion Post 393.

He had farmed near Shell Rock for 27 years.

The son of Carl D. and Maria Hammerschmidt Thies, he was born Jan. 12, 1909 in Hardy and was graduated from Shell Rock High School.

He was married to Marion R. Mead Jan. 28, 1942 in Lancaster, Mo.

Mr. Thies had resided in Cedar Falls prior to moving to rural Shell Rock in 1946. He moved into Shell Rock in 1974 and Newton’s Park Centre in 1992. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1994.
