Elmer L. Kooistra
Elmer L. Kooistra, 82, of 214 E. 28th St. S., a lifelong resident of Jasper County and a member of the Jasper County Board of Supervisors for two four-year terms, died of cardiac arrest Monday morning, Nov. 23, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Craig Peters, pastor Pleasant View Methodist Church, south of Kellogg, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home after 5 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions to the Pleasant View United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Lela; a son, Verle of Newton; a daughter, Shirley (Mrs. Robert) Reid of Buffalo, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter, of Houston, Tex.; and a sister, Thelma (Mrs. Clarence) Hotger of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and four brothers.
Mr. Kooistra was a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church, had been chairman of the church board, had been superintendent of the Sunday school and had sung in the Kilduff Quartet.
A longtime farmer, Mr. Kooistra was active in the Democratic Party and was past treasurer of the Buena Vista School District.
Mr. Kooistra, who had been a member of the Murphy baseball team, had umpired in the area for a both softball and baseball games and was an avid sports fan and car enthusiast.
The son of John and Minnie Brand Kooistra, he was born October 31, 1905 on a farm south of Kellogg, where he continued to reside until moving to Newton in 1980.
He was married to Lela Hasselbrink November 19, 1923 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1987
