Funeral services for Lela Hasselbrink Kooistra, 87, a 214 E. 28th St. S., a longtime resident of Newton and Jasper County, were held today, September 16, at the Newton First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of the church, and the Rev. William Long of the Pleasant View Methodist Church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials in her name to the Pleasant View United Methodist Church may be left at the Reese Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kooistra died Saturday morning Sept. 14, of a kidney ailment at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Survivors are a son, Verle of Newton; a daughter, Shirley (Mrs. Robert) Reid of Washington, D. C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, Albert Hasselbrink of Baxter and Louis Hasselbrink of Newton; and a sister Elsie Reed of Kellog.
Mrs. Kooistra was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer, in 1987, six brothers and a sister.
Mrs. Kooistra was a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
The organist at the Pleasant View Methodist Church for 30 years, she was a telephone operator prior to her marriage.
The daughter of Christopher and Amelia Schultz Hasselbrink, she was born June 21, 1904 in Laurel and was a graduate of Kellog Community High School.
She was married to Elmer L. Kooistra November 19, 1923 in Newton.
She resided in Buena Vista Township from 1924 until 1980 when she moved to Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1991
