John H. Van Ekeren

COLFAX - John Henry Van Ekeren, 62, of Colfax, a retired colonel in the Iowa National Guard, died Thursday, April 22 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard at the Colfax Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday and visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Hazel; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jodi and Don Shelton of St. Charles, Vicki and Randy Gunsaulus of Newton and Kristi and Robin Shephard of Sun Prairie, Wis.; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Lou (Mrs. Raymond) Roberts of Prairie City and Jeanne (Mrs. Charles) Crane of Pleasantville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Mr. Van Ekeren was a member of the Howard Street Christian Church and a member and past master of the Riverside Masonic Lodge in Colfax.

The son of Henry and Mary Callahan Van Ekeren, he he was born January 4, 1931 in Jasper County.

Mr. Van Ekeren was a 1940 graduate of Colfax Community High School and a graduate of Milton College in Milton, Wis.

He was married to Hazel Thomas in 1952 in Mitchellville. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1993
