Geneva M. Hawk, 82, of Newton died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Skiff Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, and burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Effingham, (Kan.) Cemetery.

Mrs. Hawk was born in Effingham and moved to Newton 16 years ago after living in Eldora and Colfax. She taught vocational homemaking in Kansas and Missouri schools and in Iowa work for the Department of Human Services and organized the Home Maker Home Health Services.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a volunteer with the Newton Library and First Step and a volunteer teacher at the Riverview Release Center.

Surviving are her son, Ronald of Newton; a daughter, Caroline Hawk of New Franklin, Wis.; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church, Union Church in Effingham over the Iowa Peace Institute. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News December 1994

Funeral services for Geneva Mae Sutter Hawk, 82, of 405 E. 13th St. N., a resident of Newton for 16 years, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 8, at the First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the church, will conduct services.

Mrs. Hawk, who organized and established the Home Maker Home Health Program in Iowa, will be buried at 11 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Cemetery in Effingham, Kan.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home and visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Newton First Presbyterian Church, the Effingham Union Church or the Iowa Peace Institute may be left at the funeral home.

She died Tuesday morning at Skiff Medical Center of congestive heart failure.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Susan of Newton; a daughter, Carolyn Hawk of New Franklin, Wis.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Irving, Dec. 5, 1993, and a sister, Mabel Briggs.

Mrs. Hawk was active in the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was recently installed as a deacon and was a past member of the board of trustees, was a volunteer for the Newton Library, the First Step and the Riverview Release Center, for which she was a volunteer teacher.

Mrs. Hawk taught vocational homemaking in Kansas and Missouri and worked for the Department of Human Services in Iowa.

The daughter of Fred and Sarah Isabel McPhilimy Sutter, she was born June 26, 1912 in Effingham Kan., and was graduated from Effingham High School and Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.

She was married to Irving B. Hawk June 30, 1939 and had Effingham, Kan.

She lived in Colfax and Eldora prior to moving to Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1994.
